新作世界中主要包含有三大文明勢力，它們分別是西方(west)，遠東(far east)和中東(middle east)等三個不同大型區域。不過，這並不意味著《地球帝國3》中僅僅存在三種自由力量，其中還有大量其他小勢力出現，它們大都分別屬於這三大文明中的 一個分支，更加醒目的是它們也有各自獨特的作戰風格和未來先進的科技運用。同前幾代中的文明設計相比較起來，這裡的每個文明內涵都加以進一步深化，特別是 歷史因素更加接近史實記載，遊戲過程中能讓人深刻感悟到優美的歷史文化。
　　和其他類似策略作品相比，“sierra”同《地球帝國3》的開發者“mad doc”已經將這款新遊戲引向一個全新的方向。有一點是和前作相同的，那就是繼續保持了原作中的三個基本元素，該作仍屬於一款即時戰略類型的作品，所不同 的是玩家需要引導自己的文明從史前文明進化到未來文明，每一個過程中的所有改觀都會能讓你耳目一新，並且將其中各類元素和不同作戰單位也進行了創新設計。 還有一個改變也會令大家喜出望外，還記得二代歷史時間跨度和龐大單位數量帶來的負面影響嗎?新的續作將不會存在這個毛病，上一代總共有14個文明，而這裡 已經精簡為3大不同文明勢力。
世紀爭霸 iii是
